CHAPTER TWO— June 2025
Sam peeked out the window to see the long line of black cars in the drive of Avengers Headquarters. The view from Natasha’s room offered a good spot to watch people arrive while a black dress was laid out for her. There came Peter Parker, then the Barton family, then Maria Hill. Happy Hogan greeted each arrival, signaling in the direction of the memorial.
I made a baby blanket for a pregnant woman at work and I went back and forth about it like “is this weird? To like hand make something for someone when we’re like friendly acquaintances not like bffs. God why are you so fucking awkward.” Anyway I gave it to her and she said she loved it and in the back of my head I’m like yea she’s nice and probably just humoring the weirdo. Well she texted me a picture this weekend of a scrunchy faced newborn at the hospital wrapped in the blanket I made her. And I’m like. Wow. She loved it so much she took it with her! To the hospital! To give birth! She wrapped her newborn it! I am just so filled with love and joy right now.

Bucky Barnes is staring at a blank on his S.H.I.E.L.D. file and wondering how in the hell he’s supposed to fill it in. It is not the only one of such imposing empty lines, obviously, the sheer quantity of things that Bucky may or may not have done in his life that he has no idea about could probably fill another twelve dossiers or so, but this one in particular is enough to fill him with significant trepidation.
For once, this specific box to check likely marks empty spots on the files of many other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, those both ex-brainwashed Russian killers and not. It’s a box that even civilians can go their whole lives without ever seeing filled. Usually, you hope that you’ll be able to find your soulmate before you take your last breath on this world but, well, no one’s ever lucky one hundred percent of the time. Someone always has to be the loser, the kid who gets picked last for schoolyard games, the guy who can’t manage to find his meant to be before it’s too late.

With his eyes closed, it was easier to pretend that everything was normal. With his eyes closed, he could pretend that he definitely wasn’t stark naked, lying flat on his back in the center of the bed.
